XXXTENTACION “17” Album Review

#01. The Explanation- N/A – The audio for this track is super low, so I have clue what X said at the beginning here… I’ll say this though, going into this project I’m very unfamiliar with XXXTENTACION’s music… I’m mainly familiar with the “antics” he pulls more so than the actual music he makes, so I don’t know what to expect here…

#02. Jocelyn Flores – 7.5 – A strong opener for the album! The track only lasts for 2 minutes, but the songs chorus is very hypnotic. Plus who knew XXXTENTACION could actually rap? He’s already distinguished himself from 90% of the new rappers out here on the scene… I’m quitely optimistic at this point…

#03. Depression & Obsession – 7.0 – Definitely not a “rap song”! This track has more in common with an “alt rock” song then it does with a “hip hop” song… This seems like an interlude of sorts, but since all of these songs are around 2 minutes long it is impossible to tell the difference…

#04. Everybody Dies in Their Nightmares – 8.0 – The shortest song thus far also just happens to be the best! X maximize’s the time he’s  given himself, to create a song that is both “catchy” and also has a lot of substance. XXXTENTACION isn’t following a particular rap formula with this album… He’s been very unpredictable so far, and it’s got me wanting more… This is a good thing…

#05. Revenge – 6.0 – Once again not a rap song! His singing is pretty decent in this song, but you would expect a song titled “Revenge” to more up tempo… The guitar is starting to put me to sleep...

#06. Save Me – 6.5 – This is an improvement over the last song… No rapping to be found on this track either… So far this album seems to be a hybrid album that consists of at least 3 different genres of music. This isn’t a “deal breaker” for me personally, but I can envision a big percentage of the rap/hip hop community being “turned off” by X’s music because it is very different by design…

#07. Dead Inside (Interlude) – 7.0 – I can’t tell you why I enjoyed this interlude as much as I did… Maybe it was the piano playing in the background… XXXTENTACION is mumbling something throughout this song, but I don’t think that’s the reason why I enjoyed this interlude per se… Yeah IDK, it’s a mystery…

#08. Fuck Love ft. Trippie Redd – 8.5 – I would say that this is my favorite song on the entire album! This song is just one of those “catchy” songs that will be stuck in your head for days after you hear it… Is it a “rap song”? No probably not, but should that deter someone from liking this record?.. No absolutely not…

#09. Carry On – 7.5 – This is the first song in a long time where XXXTENTACION is actually rhyming on it… and I have to say that when X is actually rapping on a song, it’s kind of good… so I really don’t think he’s using these other music genres to “mask” any rapping deficiencies he might have because I currently don’t see any to speak of…

#10. Orlando – 7.0 – The phrasse I would use to describe this song, and the entire album for that matter is “weird, but in a good way”…

#11. Ayala (Outro) – 7.0 – An album that lasted roughly 20 minutes… Normally I would say that this a bad attribution for an album to have, but I think I’ll make an exception for this album… This project delivered in ways I wasn’t expecting. The length is just a formality IMO…

Final Score: 7.5/10 – In a year where the majority of the rap/hip hop albums have under delivered, XXXTENTACION’s debut album “17” must be applauded for exceeding expectations and delivering something that is better then just simply average. It took me several listens to fully appreciate this project for what it is… and the thing that it “is”, is kind of a mysterious in itself… If you’re a rap fan who is looking for something new and original, this album might be what your looking for as long as you can get past the “genre bending”, and overall short length…
